The Year is 1944 ...

Democrats Franklin D. Roosevelt (N.Y.) and Harry S. Truman (Mo.) beat Republicans Thomas E. Dewey (N.Y.) and John W. Bricker (Oh.) for President and Vice President.

SHAEF is created in January 1944. SHAEF is the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force, which is the military organization created to direct the D-Day invasion known as Operation Overlord.



U.S. and British planes begin 24-hour bombing of Berlin.

Allied forces land in Italy.

The first U.S. foreign aid plan is approved by Congress as $1.35 billion set for UN Relief and Reconstruction Agency.

Troops (almost 2 million men) assemble in Southern England to prepare for the D-Day invasion (early May).

Operation Overlord. D-Day invasion of Normandy begins on June 6. US 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions land behind Utah Beach. British 6th Airborne Division drops behind Sword Beach. U.S. 4th Division hits Utah Beach. US 29th and 1st Divisions and the 2nd and 5th Ranger Battalions hit Omaha Beach. British 50th Division hits Gold Beach. Canadian 3rd Division hits Juno Beach. British 3rd Division hit Sword Beach. Omaha Beach is the best defended by the Germans where about 2,200 soldiers are killed or wounded, but the D-Day invasion is a military success.

Allied Breakout. The Allies move in to Normandy on June 7. Fighting moves slowly from field to field, but the reinforcement and the development of momentum to liberate Europe begins with the advance of a second front to attack the Germans from the west while the Soviets attack from the east. By July the Germans are in trouble in France.

General Douglas MacArthur begins Philippines operations landing at Leyte Gulf on October 20.

Congress passes Servicemen's Readjustment Act (GI Bill of Rights).
