Apollo 8 crew takes famous telephoto shot of the Earth rising from the Moon's surface on December 22. Apollo 8 crew become the first human beings to circumnavigate the Moon. The Apollo 8 Command Module is an
exhibit at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (Source: NASA).

North Korea captures
USS Pueblo and holds crew as prisoners for 11 months. Rev. Paul Lindstrom forms a group called "Remember the Pueblo," seeking to raise funds to gain the release of the Pueblo crew from North Korea.

North Vietnam and Viet Cong begin Tet Offensive.

U.S. signs nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

Democratic Convention in Chicago (August) tainted by violence when police disrupt Yippie demonstrations at Lincoln Park,Grant Park and stop a march at Balbo and Michigan and nearby intersections.

Intel Corporation is co-founded by Robert N. Noyce, Gordon E. Moore and Andy Grove. The company is first named NM Electronics, Incorporated in July and funded by venture capitalist Art Rock. The name is changed to Intel (short for integrated electronics), as a California corporation in August. The Intel name is purchased from a hotel that originally owned the name.

John Hersey High School opens. District 214 enrollment increasing at a rate of about 1500 students per year.

Rand Junior High School opens.

A North Central Convair 580 crash -lands into an O'Hare hangar. The crash kills 27 people and injures 26.
