Four students killed and nine wounded by National Guard during protests at Kent State University.

Arlington Students petition Principal Bruno Waara to put the U.S. flag at half mast in honor of the students killed at Kent State. A student vote is 3-to-1 in favor of lowering the flag. Principal Waara agrees to lower the flag. A faculty vote is 2-to-1 against lowering the flag. The flag is raised and lowered several times by the opposing factions.

U.S. Supreme Court upholds 18-year-old voting age.

U.S. troops in Vietnam down to less than 350,000.

Apollo 13 mission is aborted and the lives of astronauts are jeopardized when an oxygen tank explodes in the craft about 200,000 miles from earth on the way to the moon. Clever improvising saves the crew, which returned safely to earth.

Olympic Pool opens in partnership between
District 214 and the Arlington Heights Park District. The pool is used for Arlington High School swimming programs and swim team practice and competition.
