Despite a peace agreement, North VIetnam invades South Vietnam as Saigon is evacuated. South Vietnam falls and Vietnam is unified. Vietnam is formally unified in July, 1976.

Following the American withdrawal from Southeast Asia, Khmer Rouge Naval Forces seizes the SS Mayaguez and her crew of 41, the last American merchant ship to leave Saigon. A rescue operation is conducted while the remotely-held crew of the SS Mayaguez is released by their captors. 38 military personnel die during the rescue.

The term "Boat People" emerges to describe Indochinese refugees who fled Communist rule as a result of the Vietnam War. Later the tem is used to describe refugees of other economic and political plights.

Civil War in Beirut begins, crippling a once-flourishing, beautiful tourist center. Fierce violence erupts after relative silence since 1958. Beirut is divided into many territories by religious-based militias.

Bomb explodes in historic Fraunces Tavern, New York City, and kills four and injures more than 40. Puerto Rican nationalist group (FALN, Armed Forces of National Liberation) claims responsibility.

Apollo-Soyuz links in space.

Teamster President Jimmy Hoffa disappears on his way to a meeting with New Jersey Teamsters boss Anthony Provenzano andAnthony Giacalone, a Detroit Mafia captain. Investigators believe Provenzano and Giacalone had Hoffa killed to prevent his return to the Teamsters presidency.

Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme attempts to assassinate President Ford in California.

Sarah Jane Moore attempts to assassinate President Ford in California.

Iron ore ship the Edmund Fitzgerald broke up and sank in Lake Superior 17 miles northwest of White Fish Point, killing 29 crewmen on November 10. Winds of up to 74 mph were reported the night of the disaster.
